So You Think You Can Ref?

One of HVSRA’s signature educational programs, “So You Think You Can Ref?” provides education to team officials, players and spectators on what it is like to be a referee, how we can work together to minimize referee abuse and assault, and an overview of Law 11 [offside] and Law 12 [fouls and misconducts].

HVSRA wants to amplify those clubs who hosted and had all of their team officials present for an educational event.

2026 Referee Recertification is OPEN

Recertification has been opened by ENYSRC [as of 11/15/2025]. Please follow the instructions on the Recertification page of this website. There will be an in-person component to recertification.

Robert Sibiga, who was awarded 2021 MLS Referee of the year! You can read the announcement on the MLS website.

Enrico Romano, who was inducted to the Eastern New York Soccer Hall of Fame. Enrico was the past president of HVSRA for many years and helped grow our membership to over 400 referees strong. His leadership throughout the region is well known and respected throughout the community.

Congratulations to both on their accomplishments!

  • Check back here for updates in the late Fall (November 30th). If you have any questions or special circumstances, reach out by email.

    If you started a Grassroots First-time referee course since July 1st, 2025, your certification automatically extends to the end of 2026 so recertification for 2026 does not apply. In which case, please return here for 2027 recertification next year. You can still attend any in-person clinics as a training opportunity. We would love to see you!

    Referees may go to the HVSRA / Capelli Sport page to order their equipment needs.

    The Hudson Valley Soccer Referee Association (HVSRA) is pleased to announce a partnership with Capelli Sport provide referee equipment to its 600 + referee member organization. With this partnership we look forward to supporting our new, seasoned, and experienced referees with quality equipment on and off the field.

    Capelli Sport referee uniforms follow the approved design for United States Soccer Federation games and can be worn to service all Hudson Valley tournaments, leagues, and beyond. 

A baker’s dozen of the ENY 2020 National and Regional fitness test finishers (a few of the national officials didn’t hang around for the group photo…they were too cold).

2019 Regional and National Fitness Test

On a cold and breezy Saturday afternoon (November 16) at the New Hyde Park High School (Long Island), 12 Regional, and 8 National officials performed the USSF fitness test. All in attendance passed the testing, including our own Rich Zayas, Andreas Santibanez, and Brian Baer. Congratulations to all!!!

2019 Columbus Day Tournaments:

Another year, another round of fantastic matches at the Beekman and Poughkeepsie Columbus Day Tournaments. Over 75 referees officiated over 200 matches in two days. The weather cooperated this year, the players performed quite well, and all attendees had a massive amount of fun.
