Becoming a Referee

USSF Certification for Affiliated Youth and Amateur Games

All affiliated Eastern New York leagues require that all referees be certified by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).

HVSRA offers USSF Grade 8 Referee and Grade 9 Recreational Referee courses in the Mid Hudson area. To find the course dates and locations, please refer to the Course Schedule.

USSF Grade 8 Referee

The Grade 8 course consists of six (6) 3-hour sessions, for a total of eighteen (18) hours of instruction. Attendance at all sessions is required for successful completion of the course. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be registered as Grade 8 Referees with the United States Soccer Federation.

USSF Grade 9 Recreational Referee

The Grade 9 Recreational Referee may officiate games as either a Referee or Assistant Referee on recreational youth games for under-14 and younger only. They may also referee in small-sided travel games however, they may not officiate older ages, travel youth matches, or adult matches. For the latter matches, you must be at least a Grade 8 Referee. The Grade 9 course consists of a one-day, eight-hour class. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be registered as Grade 9 Recreational Referees with the United States Soccer Federation.

If a contact is named for the course, call or e-mail them to be enrolled in the course. If additional course information is needed, contact the Area Coordinator of Instruction.

Assignment Information

EHYSL, State Cup, Premier League Assignments

All East Hudson U12 Div 1 and above, State Cup and Eastern New York, North Eastern New York and Regional Premier Games for the East Hudson Region games are assigned through the internet. Availability is provided by all referees who will officiate games for these leagues. Games are assigned and accepted through a website, and e-mails are used to notify referees about assignments and changes to assignments. You can access Arbiter Sports to learn more of its functions.

Assignments are generally made by the Thursday prior to scheduled game.

Where to Send Game Reports

Game reports should be sent to the assignor and to the proper league office. The addresses of the competitions that we support are listed in Arbiter Sports
